Comfortable, lightweight hiking clothing is usually the best choice when heading out on the trail. This makes athletic shorts or leggings great options.
For tops, you can opt for a sweat-wicking athletic shirt, but a cotton T-shirt can often work just fine if your hike isn’t too strenuous.
Layers, Layers, Layers
Layers make it easy to take on and off clothes as the weather demands. Because you’ll likely be passing in and out of the shade and travelling up and down in elevation, there will be quite a bit of fluctuation in temperature. Plus, the day will start chillier in the morning and warm up in the afternoon.
Because of this, it’s best to wear plenty of lightweight layers you can remove as needed. A light jacket or fleece can add warmth when layered over your regular shirt. Add a windbreaker over the top to block any wind or rain and add extra warmth as needed.
The Proper Footwear
There’s no need to worry if you don’t know much about hiking shoes when deciding what to wear on a hike.
The best option is always hiking boots—these are created with soles designed to grip uneven terrain, waterproof uppers, and a tall shaft to protect your ankle. The shaft prevents you from getting scratched by thorns or tall grass, bitten by insects, and twisting an ankle on loose rocks.
However, a sturdy pair of sneakers can work fine if you don’t have hiking boots, especially if the trail you plan to climb isn’t too difficult. Above all, don’t wear cowboy boots!
While they can protect your ankle, there are plenty of differences between hiking and cowboy boots that make them unsuitable. For example, cowboy boots often have a slick sole that increases your risk of taking a tumble.
